About Us

Founded in June 2008, bitcolumns aims to bring the latest technology news, reviews and gossip to students all over the world. Based and run in the UK, we are a small team of people providing a variety of media services aimed at the student market.

The Was

bitcolumns started with an idea in March 2007, by a group of A-level students in South East England. Their idea was to bring the latest technology news and reviews to other students within the UK. Plans started to come together to create a website called UniTek Review (a name very soon after scrapped), but efforts were put on hold due to obligations to education and exams; only to return to full force in April 2008.

In April 2008 Sam Hutchings and James Deer started work on what would come to be known as bitcolumns. The original site launched in June 2008 with a very simple design, before James Deer took control of the design section of the team. Through months of work on designing, coding, organising, and phoning, Sam and James were able to announce and release a brand new bitcolumns.com in the first week of September 2008, with a team of 14 people.

In the months leading up to February 2009 work started on a complete rehaul of the idea, design, and code that had been the basis of bitcolumns.com, so that in Mid February 2009 a brand new website was launched. With new features like video podcasts, accompanying radio show, and better integration with Twitter and discussion through comments, the relaunch was also with a much smaller team of people.

The Now

The Will Be

The vision and aim with bitcolumns has always been to make it a thriving community and a pleasant site to visit, providing the latest technology news and reviews to its readers, viewers, and listeners. But this vision is ever changing, and has now come to encompass providing tailored advice and articles for student communities; providing exclusive offers, discounts and products for our readers, viewers and listeners; and putting on events for students.

Our aim is to make bitcolumns less of a website, and more of a way of life. Making it the one stop site for people wanting advice, offers, and events.

Our Promise

We make this promise to all of you:

That use of bitcolumns.com will remain completely free through the entirety of it’s life, and that it will always provide fresh and unbiased news and reviews.
